Rexor/John Vance

I have been working in the underground music, painting and film/video scenes in the Twin Cities since landing in the Midwest in 1989. While my own work is centered around experimental sound performance and soundtrack, I have been involved in curating events and the general promotion of a wide-range of artistic activities, underground and otherwise. The chief vehicles for most of my artistic output are under the umbrellas of WRONG and Panelectric Living Sinema. WRONG is an ever-changing unconventional ensemble incorporating everything from large group improvisation to solo composition and performance art, usually with some sort of anti-strategy.

WRONG has traveled in and out of very disparate underground noise and improvisation contexts, playing on bills with a variety of bands, from major-label noise-rock bands such as Sonic Youth and Babes in Toyland to extreme NYC jazz artists Borbetomagus and original gangstas The Nihilist Spasm Band, ending up in Chicago and NYC quite a bit. The most recent double-CD release, 'In The WRONG,' was described by WIRE as 'an invocation of the spirit of Los Angeles Free Music Society. Truly inspired.'

Panelectric Living Sinema was co-founded with filmmaker Amelie Collins to explore the full-range of image/sound marriage as it relates to pre-cinema lanterns and early electronic devices up to the universals of the Internet and digital presentations. This Sinema has performed at schools, museums, in alleyways, raves, theaters and is beginning to reach more into live Web streaming, opening up a dialogue between the role of technology in shaping an anti-narrative and public performance as interactive context.

The theme that binds all my interests is that of the 'in-between.' Free music changes the role of composer into that of participator in the structure of the performance more as negotiator, host and directive obstacle.
